Initially, I titled my journal "Picaresque Periphrastic Passages: Only one person's opinion under freedom of speech...not defamation or liable..." because of my tendency for rambling along tangents and advocacy. But, I began to question if I was being somewhat self-righteous; judging choices and behaviors of others using my experiences, knowledge, skills, hopes, and dreams as a basis under the guise of a personal journal? That whole "hindsight is 20-20" thing. I do not have the right or basis to judge anyone. I am no better than anyone else. Therefore, I have re-titled my journal "Individual Exploration and Experience: Different but yet the Same -- No Better but yet No Worse" to reflect that my journal is my own personal exploration of questions, thoughts, ideas, and situations in my own life from my point of view. Also, that my exploration and experience may be different from others', but that I believe we all share general life patterns of reward, loss, dreams, and so on. Finally, that my exploration and experience is no better and no worse then anyone else's. It is written by me and for me; I write for none other. However, for whatever reason, if others are interested, many of my explorations are available for sharing and comment. I always appreciate learning about others' perspectives, experiences, thoughts, hopes, and dreams.
Below are some quotations that I feel represent my journaling intentions:
I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.
Joan Didion (1934 - )
I write because I'm afraid to say some things out loud.

This is pretty much what journals are all about, at least to me. I knew as I wrote them that even though they provided an excellent place for brain (and heart, and psyche) dump, they were mainly a map of me.
Colleen Wainwright, communicatrix, 03-23-2006
The man who writes about himself and his own time is the only man who writes about all people and all time.
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)
The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think.
Edwin Schlossberg
If writers stopped writing about what happened to them, then there would be a lot of empty pages.
Elaine Liner, We Got Naked, Now What, SXSW 2006
Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.
Cyril Connolly (1903 - 1974)
See things as they are and write about them. Don’t waste your creative energy trying to make things up. Even if you are writing fiction, write the things you see and know.
Real Live Preacher, Real Live Preacher weblog, 07-25-06
If you want to write you must have faith in yourself. Faith enough to believe that if a thing is true about you, it is likely true about many people. And if you can have faith in your integrity and your motives, then you can write about yourself without fear.
